Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German honec, from Old High German honag or apparently *hunag with lack of a-mutation, perhaps a compromise form between forms with regular -o- and forms with -ü- from Old High German *hunig, compare Middle High German hünic, all ultimately from Proto-West Germanic *hunag.
