From neuter plural of Ancient Greek ὑμενόπτερος (humenópteros, membrane-winged), from ὑμήν (humḗn, thin skin, membrane) +‎ πτερόν (pterón, feather, wing) +‎ -ος (-os, adjectival suffix).
