From Arabic إِبْلِيس (ʔiblīs, Iblis), possibly from the trilateral root ب ل س (b-l-s) with the general meaning of “despair”, بَلَسَ (balasa). Alternatively, perhaps from Ancient Greek διάβολος (diábolos).
