German[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From Ignatius by dropping the Latin ending.
Pronunciation[edit]
Proper noun[edit]
Ignaz m (proper noun, strong, genitive Ignaz' or Ignazens or (with an article) Ignaz, plural Ignaze or Ignaz)
- a male given name, equivalent to English Ignatius
Usage notes[edit]
- The name was popular mostly in Bavaria and Austria. A petform was Nazi, which contributed to the nickname for "National Socialist" (the Nazi Party having its roots in Bavaria).
- At the same time, ironically, Ignaz was popular among Jews as a lose Germanization of Isaak. Especially outside Austro-Bavarian areas it came to be regarded as a typically Jewish name.
