Jüddefleesch

Central Franconian[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From Jüdd (“Jew”) + Fleesch (“meat”). The sense “mushroom” in all likelihood derives from the notion of “inferior meat” (and not from a comparison to Jewish human flesh as some[1] have assumed).
Pronunciation[edit]
Noun[edit]
Jüddefleesch n
- (Ripuarian, historical) kosher meat bought from Jewish butchers (as it was sometimes cheaper)
- (Ripuarian, dated) stringy or otherwise inferior pieces of meat
- (western Ripuarian, collective) mushrooms
- Synonym: Schwamm
