Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Russian колхо́з (kolxóz), contraction of коллекти́вное хозя́йство (kollektívnoje xozjájstvo, collective farm, household).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈkɔlçɔs/, /kɔlˈçoːs/
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: Kol‧chos

Noun[edit]

Kolchos m or (rare) n (strong, genitive Kolchos or Kolchoses, plural Kolchose)

Usage notes[edit]

  • The genitive singular is des Kolchos with stress on the first o and des Kolchoses with stress on the second. The plural is always stressed on the second o.
  • Outside of learned contexts the feminine form die Kolchose, a backformation from the plural, is by far predominant.
