17th century, borrowed from French corporal, an alteration (after corps) of Middle French caporal, from Italian caporale.

(military)

  1. (Switzerland, history, or non-German armies) corporal, lower non-commissioned officer (in today’s Switzerland equivalent to OR-4)
  2. (Austria) an enlisted rank (equivalent to OR-3)
  3. (Germany, since 2021) a rank awarded to high-performing enlisted personnel (equivalent to OR-4 and paid like OR-5, but not considered an NCO rank)
