- As a Jewish surname, via Polish from Yiddish קאָרט (kort, “cord”), ultimately from the root of English cord.
- Also as an Ashkenazic Jewish surname, from Yiddish קאַרטל (kartl, “card”), itself borrowed from German Karte.
