Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from German Low German Kuddelmuddel. The word originally meant "dirty linen" and is derived from the verb koddeln (to wash clothes superficially). The rhyming part might be based on a cognate of German Modder (mud), a Dutch form of which also led to English muddle.
