Etymology[edit]

From kyrkje (church) +‎ nes (headland), a calque of Danish Kirkenæs, referring to a church on the place built in 1862. Replaced the older names Pisselvnes and Håkjerringnes. Cognate with Icelandic Kirkjunes.
