Etymology[edit]

In the literal sense inherited from Middle High German lewenzan, equivalent to Löwe (lion) +‎ -n- +‎ Zahn (tooth). The botanic sense is a 16th-century calque of Latin dēns leōnis, whence also English dandelion.
