Etymology[edit]

First attested as zwaluwe in 1291. Derived from laag (low, lower) and the hydronym Zwaluwe, which in turn derives from Proto-Germanic *swel- (swell, bloat). The element laag was added to distinguish the settlement from Hooge Zwaluwe. Compare Swalmen.
