Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Alteration of Lelystad by replacing Lely- with lelijk (ugly), therefore equivalent to lelijk +‎ stad. Lelystad is a planned city founded in 1967 and was thus built chiefly in the styles of the 1960s and 70s (e.g. brutalism), which tend to be counted among the less favoured decades in modern architecture.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈleːləkˌstɑt/
  • Hyphenation: Le‧lijk‧stad
