Etymology[edit]

Attested as Hoensbroek - Kloosterkolonie in 1929. Derived from a compound of the name of Saint Mary and rode (land cleared of trees). The toponym was inspired by the presence of a Lourdes cave near the neighbourhood and its proximity to the former hamlet of Kouvenrade.
