Dutch[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Attested as Hoensbroek - Kloosterkolonie in 1929. Derived from a compound of the name of Saint Mary and rode (“land cleared of trees”). The toponym was inspired by the presence of a Lourdes cave near the neighbourhood and its proximity to the former hamlet of Kouvenrade.
See also Limburgish Mariaroa.
