Latin[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Compare the hydronymy of several other rivers in Europe: the Main in Germany; the Minho in Iberia; the Meon in England, all perhaps connected to Proto-Indo-European *mey- (to go past). This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
