- As a French surname, variant of Mayrant, itself possibly a variant of Mayrand, from Mayran in Aveyron (Occitan Mairanh), of uncertain origin, possibly Gallo-Roman/Medieval Latin Marianum or Marinus.
- As an English/Norman/French surname, from the Old French personal name Morant, from a Medieval Latin personal name such as Moderandus (“he who is able”) or from Maurandus, based on Maurus (“Moor”).
- Also as an English surname of Norman origin, from Old French demeurant (“rest, staying”).
