  1. the Low Countries
  2. (historical) the United Kingdom of the Netherlands (a former country in Western Europe)
  3. (occasionally proscribed) Netherlands, Kingdom of the Netherlands (a country in Western Europe, consisting of four constituent countries: the Netherlands per se, Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten)

Usage notes[edit]

The use of Niderlandy as the short form of the country's name is prescribed by the European Union.[1] This usage, however, is discouraged by the Commission on Standardization of Geographical Names in Poland, which advises using Holandia instead.[2]
