Borrowed from West Frisian Nynke, presumably a hypocoristic variant from Latin [Term?], from Ancient Greek Αἰκατερίνη (Aikaterínē), which was associated with Ancient Greek καθαρος (katharos, pure) by folk etymology in Late Antiquity. Cognate to English Catherine.
