English[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From French nigérien, from Niger + -ien.

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

Nigerien (plural Nigeriens)

  1. A person from Niger or of Nigerien descent.

Usage notes[edit]

  • The term Nigerois occasionally appears (in Merriam-Webster, older editions of the CIA World Factbook, and The New York Times style guide), but since that is not used by the people of Niger themselves, Nigerien is preferred.[3][4]
  • Nigerien is distinguished from Nigerian, which denotes a person from Nigeria.
