Originally Odins vi ("shrine of Odin"), whence also Vojens (a town in Southern Jutland). Compare Old Norse Óðinn and (temple, sanctuary). The surrounding area was known as a sanctuary for worshippers of Odin. (See Odense on Wikipedia.Wikipedia )
