Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as oxe in 1266. Etymology unknown. Tentative links to Middle Dutch oke (place where vegetables have been freshly planted), Proto-Germanic *ohso- (ox) and German Low German uke (protruding piece of a roof) have been proposed.
