Dutch[edit]
Etymology[edit]
First attested as oxe in 1266. Etymology unknown. Tentative links to Middle Dutch oke (“place where vegetables have been freshly planted”), Proto-Germanic *ohso- (“ox”) and German Low German uke (“protruding piece of a roof”) have been proposed.
