Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German paradīs(e), from Old High German paradīs, from Proto-West Germanic *paradīs (Paradise, Eden), borrowed from Latin paradīsum. The modern form with -ie- perhaps partly from non-diphthongising dialects, but chiefly after the Latin.
