Potentially attested as petthe in 1141, attested with certainty as in petthe in 1217. Perhaps derived from a collectivised form of Proto-Germanic *paþa- (“mud, swamp”) or from Old Dutch pad (“path, narrow road”). Compare Paddepoel, Padhuis and Peize.
