Borrowed from Italian per cento, from Latin per (“through, by”) and centum (“hundred”), modified by the influence of Latin pro (“for”) or German pro.

     Carbon dioxide contributes by its amount more than any other greenhouse gas to climate change, but its concentration in the air is less than 0.04 percent.

Usage notes

The plural Prozente is only used to mean different percent values or percentages: „Was sind die genauen Prozente für A und B?“ "What are the exact percentages of A and B?" Otherwise, like in English, the singular is used: fünfzig Prozent "fifty percent".
