Etymology[edit]

From Gothic, interpreted to mean "counsel spear," from Proto-Germanic *rēdaz + *gaizaz.[1] Compare Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐍂𐌴𐌳𐌰𐌱𐌰 (garēdaba) and *𐌲𐌰𐌹𐍃 (*gais).
