Etymology[edit]

Raub (robbery) +‎ Kopie (copy)

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): [ˈʁaʊ̯pkoˌpiː]
  • (file)

Noun[edit]

Raubkopie f (genitive Raubkopie, plural Raubkopien)

  1. a copy of content the former of which has been obtained under violation of intellectual property rights

Usage notes[edit]

  • Usage of the word has been pushed mainly by the music industry and there has been criticism that the word is a dysphemism, because Raub includes that someone uses violence against life or limb or threatens to apply it to take away something. A more neutral alternative is Schwarzkopie.
