Rayleigh quotient (plural Rayleigh quotients)

  1. (mathematics) A formula used in the min-max theorem to find exact eigenvalues, and in eigenvalue algorithms to obtain an eigenvalue approximation from an eigenvector approximation; it has applications in quantum mechanics.
