Latin[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Modification of Classical ūtēnsilia, evidently reshaped after ūsō (“use”, verb), but the reason for the change in the initial vowel remains unclear.

*usitilium n (Proto-Italo-Western-Romance)
Reconstruction notes[edit]
Per the etymology, the plural form would have come first, with the singular resulting from a back-formation.
