Etymology[edit]

Seemingly borrowed from Byzantine Greek σαυράκιον (saurákion, diminutive based on σαῦρος (saûros)), with metathesis of /vr/ to /rv/.

The distribution of the Catalan derivative sarvatxo is especially concentrated around Albaida and Alcoy, areas which would have experienced considerable Byzantine influence.
