From Proto-Indo-European *sm̥h₂-ó-s, from *semh₂- (warm season, summer). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *sumaraz, Armenian ամառ (amaṙ, summer), Khotanese [script needed] (hamana-, summer), Sanskrit समा (sámā, season, year), Tocharian A ṣme.
