Proto-Finnic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Unknown. Possibly a variant of the root in *jälki. The superficial similarity to Proto-Mongolic *jerge,[* 1] while noted, appears to be merely coincidental for want of any tenable explanation for a connection.

Noun[edit]

*järki

  1. row
  2. order, condition

Inflection[edit]

Descendants[edit]

  • Estonian: järg (row, queue; turn (to do something))
  • Finnish: järki (sense, reason, logic; (obsolete) order)
  • Ingrian: järkenää (immediately, at once)
  • Karelian: järki (order, state of being, condition)
  • Livvi: järilleh (back)
  • Ludian: d'ärgilleh (back)
  • Veps: järg (just, completely), (dialectal) d'ärk
  • Võro: järg (turn (to do something))
  • Votic: (Kattila, Mati) järkeä, (Pummala) järkeäzä (immediately, at once)
  • Proto-Samic: *jearkë (weather conditions)

Notes[edit]

  1. ^ Note that the Proto-Mongolic *j is an affricate /d͡ʒ/ (English j), not the same as the Proto-Finnic *j, which is a glide /j/ (English y).
