Etymology[edit]

Presumably from Proto-Indo-European *terkʷ- (to turn); compare Sanskrit तर्कु (tarku, spindle) and Latin torqueō (to twist). Kroonen assumes metathesis of Pre-Germanic *térkʷos to *twérkos.
