Etymology[edit]

Probably formed from the root of *lizaną (to know, understand), from Proto-Indo-European *leys- (track, furrow, trail, trace), equivalent to *lizaną +‎ *-þiz. Compare also Proto-West Germanic *liʀnōn (to learn).
