From Proto-Indo-European *lewbʰ-, *lewb- (to peel, break, damage), from Proto-Indo-European *lew- (to cut, remove, prune, separate). Sense of love potion influenced by similar forms from unrelated *lubō (love). Cognate with Irish luibh (herb).
