From Proto-Indo-European *skéltis, from Proto-Indo-European *skel- (to be obliged, be beholden to, owe, be guilty), equivalent to Proto-Germanic *skulaną (to be obligated, owe) +‎ *-þiz. Cognate with Lithuanian kaltė (guilt).
