Proto-Germanic[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Of unknown origin. Often the only cognate compared is Latvian šērve (“pigskin, thick skin”) and a possible reconstruction Proto-Balto-Slavic *sverdvē, though the Latvian term itself could have been borrowed through Germanic from German Low German Schörwe.
