Proto-Germanic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Unknown. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *weydʰ-, from Proto-Indo-European *wey- (to wither; fade). Or, from a substrate source in common with Latin vitrum (woad). Compare also Ancient Greek ἰσάτις (isátis, woad).

(Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
