Etymology[edit]

Uncertain; presumably cognate with Ancient Greek ὠκύς (ōkús, fast, swift), Latin ōcior (swifter), possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h₃eHḱ-ú-s, *h₁oHḱ-ú-s, perhaps related to *h₁éḱwos (horse).[1]
