Etymology[edit]
From earlier *θeiljos, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁i-l-yo-s (“sucker”), from *dʰeh₁(y)- (“to suckle, nurse”). Cognate with Ancient Greek θῆλυς (thêlus, “feminine”). Displaced *suHnús.
