The word was loaned into many Sino-Tibetan languages, such as Nuosu (lat, tea), Naxi leil (tea), S'gaw Karen လၣ် (, leaf), as well as Chinese (chá) (most likely through a Loloish source).

Cognate with Gata' uliaˀ ("leaf").
