Pronunciation[edit]
- Considering that nasal vowels in equivalent positions were preserved in Old Icelandic as late as the 1100s, the root vowel was certainly nasal.
Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Germanic *ansuz (“god”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂énsus, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ens- (“to engender, beget”). Cognate with Old English ōs, Old Saxon ās, Old High German ans-.
