Etymology[edit]

Blend of *žędati (to wish, desire) +‎ *-ьnъ and *žędь (crave) +‎ *-ьnъ. Parallel to Proto-Slavic *žęďьnъ (< *žęďa +‎ *-ьnъ) whence standard Slovene žẹ́jən (tonal orthography).

Further related to Lithuanian godùs (greedy, covetous).
