Etymology[edit]

  • Per Derksen, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *laukīˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *lowk-éye-ti, causative/iterative from the root *lewk- (light).
  • Vasmer assumes the same Indo-European root and postulates the following semantic development: "light" > "see" > "look for" > "wait for" > "get" > "accomplish, reach, throw, etc.".
