From Proto-Balto-Slavic *pirštis, from Proto-Indo-European *pŕ̥s-ti-s ~ *pr̥s-téy-s, from *pers- (to sprinkle). Cognate with Latvian pìrkstis and Lithuanian pir̃kšnys.
