Etymology[edit]

From *ükte (one) with a suffix of unknown derivation and origin. The Finno-Mordvinic term has sometimes been connected with Eastern Mari индеше (indeše), but this is likely a parallel formation and not related directly to the term. See *kakteksa for more details.
