Proto-Yoruba[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Proposed to be derived from Proto-Edekiri *ɛ̀-ɣɔ̀rɪ̀ɣɔ̀, ultimately from *ɛ̀- (nominalizing prefix) +‎ *ɣɪ̀ɣɔ̀ (partial reduplication of *ɣɔ̀ "to spray, to smoke"). Retained only in Olukumi and Ekiti dialects, while other Proto-Yoruba descendants inherited *è-fífí
