Is /g fricative/ usual for all positions in Proto-Germanic? I've seen other lemmas where the initial voiced /g, b, d/ are presented as stops, but the medial versions as fricatives. Is there a pattern for this? Traversetravis (talk) 15:08, 30 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

All of them are stops when geminated or when preceded by a nasal consonant. Aside from that, each of them individually has some special cases where they are stops. *d is a stop after *l for example. Both *b and *d are stops word-initially, but *g apparently was not, which is preserved in early Old English and modern Dutch. —Rua (mew) 15:56, 30 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Ah thanks a lot - could you point me to a text which lists all the special cases? Traversetravis (talk) 13:13, 2 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
