Etymology[edit]

In view of the extra-Germanic cognates, very likely an original j-present 4th class strong verb, especially due to its primary derivations, *skalō, "shell, bowl", *skiljô, "butcher", *skelduz, "shield", and secondary o-grade feminine *skēlō, "shell, bowl". Any original zero-grade forms, of which I can find none, would likely have been changed to full-grade to avoid confusion with *skulaną, which is probably what lead to its demotion to a weak verb.
