Reconstruction[edit]

Just putting it out there that in his newer work, Ringe seems to accept that the Proto-Germanic form was *wiraz, (same as *nistaz), and lists them under a-umlaut. Anglom (talk) 18:27, 26 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Under what conditions does a-umlaut occur? —Rua (mew) 18:50, 26 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
"Throughout the NWGmc area stressed *u was apparently lowered to *o when the next syllable contained a nonhigh vowel and no nasal in the syllable coda, nor *j, intervened." Also that it occurred in stressed root nouns in North but not West Germanic, ON 'borg' vs. OE 'burh'.
Odds are also that the a-umlaut resulted in inflectional variation, nom. 'wolf' vs voc. 'wulf', later allowing for leveling in one direction or the other. Anglom (talk) 02:23, 27 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
