  • Hi all, I've just read on Málið.is that Icelandic jölstur (willow) from Proto-Germanic *elustrō belongs to this group too. Does anyone know of any sources that repeat this? It also mentions OHG hilster ~ halster as a cognate, but I can't seem to find a modern German descendant. Of course, there is also an Icelandic collective for this ilstri. To me, the vocalisations don't quite line up - surely we'd expect a Germanic cognate to begin with *a, not *e? But the initial j- in Norse would not occur with *a-. I assume I'm right in thinking that the *-tr- is another manifestation of the tree suffix we see in Germanic? Any suggestions? TheSilverWolf98 (talk) 09:03, 8 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
